Emergency strikes the Minnesota Wild and Marc Andre Fleury's forced to make playoff debut
Former Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was thrust into action against his old club for the Minnesota Wild in Tuesday night's Game 5.
The Stanley Cup Playoffs continue to get more exciting, as one of the Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights will be taking a 3-2 series lead, depending on who can prevail in overtime.
Both teams are deadlocked at 2-2 after 60 minutes of regulation, requiring extra time to settle a winner.
But a familiar face to Golden Knights fans is back in the crease for the Wild, called upon into emergency action.
Thanks to what the Wild are describing as a "sickness" that starting goalie
Filip Gustavsson is experiencing, Marc-Andre Fleury, who is playing in his final year in the NHL, has been tabbed by coach John Hynes.
Fleury was the first player selected in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft as the newest member of the expansion Golden Knights, and immediately became a fan favorite due to his clutch play, infectious smile, and personality.
But after several years of being one of the faces of the team, they dumped him to the Chicago Blackhawks in a 2021 trade that he found out about on social media.
After playing the 1st 3/4 of the year with the Blackhawks, he was dealt to the Wild at the 2022 Trade Deadline, where he's remained ever since. He announced last fall that he
intends to retire at the end of this year.
Hockey fans may remember 18 years ago when Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo had an extremely untimely case of the runs while in overtime of Game 6 of his club's 2nd round series against the Anaheim Ducks.
While he was taking care of his personal business in the visiting locker room's restroom, Danny Sabourin was called upon and thrown to the wolves in overtime; he managed to hold down the fort until Luongo was able to eventually return to the crease.
