Goal-scoring forward Alexander Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals visited the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday night and endured 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild, but what's making the headlines is the Great 8's actions towards goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury who's retirement is looming at the end of the season.
Despite a 4-2 loss to the Wild, the Capitals shined through and made the headlines for their actions towards Fleury after the final horn sounded.
In what's expected to be Fleury's last NHL season, the Minnesota Wild are sitting pretty with the top Wildcard spot in the Western Conference with 87 points.
The two great storylines of this NHL season involve Alex Ovechkin's goal hunt and Marc-Andre Fleury's retirement, and with roughly 10 games remaining on both of them, the Great 8 took matters into his own hands, despite the loss, and pulled off a respectable move last night.
Ovechkin waves Capitals team back on the ice to honor Fleury
As soon as the final horn sounded, the Capitals headed to their locker room after a tough loss, and Ovechkin immediately skated over and called his teammates back onto the ice to give Fleury a final goodbye.
This is just pure class for Ovechkin, in his last time meeting Marc-Andre Fleury and the Minnesota Wild this season.
Prior to their matchup, Fleury gave his honest thoughts on Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal record.
"I think he's going to break the record this year. He reminds me of young Ovi. He's really hungry, he wants to score goals. He's so happy after his goals. Without his injury, he would've finished the season with 50 goals. It's incredible. He always plays with his foot on the gas. He's a tremendous competitor."
