The Chicago Blackhawks acquired a 6-foot-6 monstrous prospect in Los Angeles at the 2025 NHL draft, with their first-round, 29th-overall selection, and latest reports reveal he could consider pursuing a career outside of hockey.

General manager Kyle Davidson took a major risk when it came to using up a first round pick on forward Mason West, a 6-foot-6 high school football standout quarterback.
West is a three-star recruit and stands out as the 13th best quarterback in the entirety of Minnesota, according to 247 sports.
He's also a high-tier hockey center, who led Edina to the 2024 Minnesota State High School League Hockey Championship, which ultimately led to his selection by the Blackhawks.
«It was a dream come true. So many people helped get me here. My family, friends, and the whole Edina community has supported me a ton. I'm super blessed."

- Mason West

Mason West's main focus is winning a football state championship

Many are wondering when his arrival to the Blackhawks organization will be, and it may be quite some time before his pro hockey career kicks off; if ever.
»While committed to hockey at Michigan State, West's football prowess-2,592 yards and 37 touchdowns as a junior-has drawn interest from smaller D-I programs like Marshall and Kent State. Yet, West's focus remains on a football state championship.

«I have yet to win a football state championship, and that was a goal of mine,» he said. «It would be super special to win something with these guys."

With several standout performances in his football season early on, West is expected to attract bigger D-1 offers.
«If he has an opportunity to go to a big school as a quarterback, I have a feeling that the Chicago Blackhawks are going to lose out on a guy who they drafted at the end of the first round.»

This could ultimately backfire on the Blackhawks and Kyle Davidson, and certainly change the NHL's perspective on drafting multi-sport athletes moving forward.
