Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Nick Schmaltz has been a key driver of the success so far this year for the Utah Mammoth, who have impressed with an 8-2 record through 10 games.
The Utah Mammoth are turning heads everywhere in their 1st year since their new identity was officially decided upon. Their opening season in Salt Lake City, they were simply known as the Utah Hockey Club.
They've won 8 of 10 games so far this year and are in top place in the Central Division, ahead of teams like the Colorado Avalanche, Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars.
And one of the major reasons why the Mammoth are having such great success so far is the play of former Chicago Blackhawks forward Nick Schmaltz.
So far this year, he has 16 points (7G, 19A) and is on pace for 131 points. Even though it's unlikely that he actually reaches that plateau, it's still an impressive beginning.
The Mammoth are impressing so far, and Schmaltz is one of the main reasons why.
Nick Schmaltz began his NHL career with the Chicago Blackhawks
Schmaltz is a former Blackhawks forward, as they took him with the 20th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
He would start his career in a Blackhawks sweater, but he
would be traded in 2018 to the Arizona Coyotes, who are now the Mammoth, for
Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini.
He's played the last seven years in that organization and has emerged as one of their top scoring threats and leaders.
So far in 598 career games between the Blackhawks and Coyotes/Mammoth, Schmaltz has 439 points (149G, 290A).
