Known as "The Great One" for his legendary NHL career, Wayne Gretzky has a dark cloud hovering over him in the form of a potentially messy legal situation.
Wayne Gretzky will be forever known as the top player in National Hockey League history, but there's a dark cloud hanging over him right now in the form of a potentially messy legal situation.
After being sued in 2022 by his former business partner Veera Mahajan, he's now filing suit against her and declaring that her suit from 3 years ago was meritless, according to a report from report from NYPOST
Mahajan invested in a weight-loss gum supplement known as "OMG Gum" that was advertised as helping users curb their appetite; Gretzky's wife Janet also was a spokesperson for the company.
Gretzky was sued by Mahajen, who accused the hockey icon of lying about his use of the product that supposedly helped him shed 35 pounds; the lawsuit also indicated that Gretzky allegedly admitted to lying, which led to the company's demise.
But in a twist, Mahajan reportedly filed to dismiss the lawsuit in 2024.
Gretzky denied lying about the weight loss and claimed Mahajan only filed the lawsuit because she thought Gretzky would quickly settle «for millions in order to avoid potential negative publicity,» according to the report.
He is suing her for malicious prosecution and seeking unspecified damages.
The lawsuit was reportedly filed in Los Angeles County this week.
Gretzky is not in the clear with «OMG,» however.
The company's founder, Steven Sparks, sued Gretzky with similar allegations as Mahajan just days before she filed her lawsuit.
That lawsuit remains ongoing.
