Abysmal is a fantastic word to describe the Blackhawks defense, but there's some young and not so young guys who in the future will look to change the look of Chicago's defense.
First name coming to mind is up again down again Ian Mitchell. Ian was well looked at with at Denver in college but hasn't seen a lot of action this season with the big club. However in Rockford he has 32 points in 51 games from the blue line. Expect him to want to stay up with the big club next season.
Alex Vlasic has played some minutes with the Hawks, but will end the year in Rockford to get some experience. He hasn't tallied much however he isn't afraid of contact and is a smooth skater.
Lastly, Seth Jones will be on a new big money contract and while he's a strong player in his offensive zone, and does plenty of the little things right, it would be a welcome addition to his game if he got more physical and puck hungry. Jones is meant to be the anchor of a new look defense, probably in a new system with a new coach, and having a more all around game could make him worth every penny.
