The Blackhawks Hold One of The Most Underrated Prospects in The NHL
The Chicago Blackhawks' defense is getting a boost from their promising prospects. Among the likes of Kevin Korchinski and Wyatt Kaiser, one player often overlooked is Ethan Del Mastro. Despite his lower profile, his progress in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) over the past four years stands out.
Del Mastro's journey in the OHL began with a challenging season in 2019-20 with the Mississauga Steelheads, where his stats weren't impressive. An entire OHL season was missed due to COVID-19. However, the Chicago Blackhawks saw potential and drafted him in the fourth round (105th overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft.
Physically, Del Mastro fits the mold the Blackhawks are looking for in defensemen. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, his size and style of play align with the team's preferences. Mark Eaton, Blackhawks' assistant general manager of player development, noted his defensive skills and room for offensive growth.
Not afraid to throw a hit
Del Mastro's growth was evident in the 2021-22 season with Mississauga, tallying 21 points in 22 games and earning the captaincy. Later traded to the Sarnia Sting, he recorded 38 points in 30 games and emerged as the seventh-best defenseman in the OHL with 59 points in 52 games.
He also played a key role in Team Canada's Gold medal-winning team at the World Junior Championship, showcasing his dedication and ice time management.
Recognized as a top defender by his coach, Del Mastro's offensive potential is becoming more evident. He is set to join the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL and could mirror Niklas Hjalmarsson's shutdown defenseman style. Del Mastro himself models his game after players like
Ben Chiarot and
Ryan McDonagh.
His leadership, a championship mindset, and work ethic are attributes that stand out. Corey Pronman of The Athletic ranks Chicago's prospect pipeline highly, and Del Mastro's future as an NHL defenseman seems promising, given his focus on defensive play, ongoing offensive improvement, and determination.
The Chicago Blackhawks see potential in Del Mastro, and his journey will continue to unfold, potentially adding a hidden gem to the team's roster.
