Harrowing News For The Chicago Sports World
The Chicago Cubs haven't been a winning team since their last World Series win in 2016.
Each year, teams hope to find that one prospect that will propel them to the next level and replace talent lost through trades and free agency.
This may not be the case for a current Cubs prospect.
According to news out of the Dominican Republic, Chicago Cubs prospect Josefrailin Alcántara is being sought out by the police. 26-year-old Darwin Díaz Valerio was shot to death in Santiago.
The police report states that the two argued over a debt owed, and then the 18-year-old shot Díaz Valerio, sought medical attention after the incident, and fled afterward.
Alcántara was signed in January 2022 to a massive bonus of $500K and this was the 4th biggest bonus given amongst the 30 international players signed last year by the Cubs.
As Diario Libre reported, it appears that Alcántara has been released, but the MiLB website hasn't been updated to reflect the transaction.
This is sad news for the family of Diaz Valerio, who will experience tragedy beyond the cost of baseball itself.
Alcántara previously had been playing in the Dominican Summer League and had a respectable batting average over 40 games.
