NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic has an update on what an extension of Connor Bedard with the Chicago Blackhawks could look like, and it's substantial.
The Utah Mammoth's recent signing of center
Logan Cooley to an eight-year, $80 million deal just set the market. This raises the bar for pending RFAs (restricted free agents) who haven't signed a new deal with the team.
Bedard, who wasn't intent on rushing into the next contract, seems to be playing the waiting game for the rest of the free agents to finalize their deals to get a good gauge of the market.
For the 1st overall pick in 2023, patience could pay off for the former Calder Trophy winner.
In 128 games during his first two seasons as a Blackhawk, he scored 128 points. This season, he's scored 15 points (6-9) in 12 games, more than a point per game pace for the generational talent.
NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun gives us an idea of Connor Bedard's next potential contract.
The superstar forward, who was selected 1st overall in 2023, hasn't finalized a new deal with the Blackhawks.
There's been speculation that the reason the deal hasn't been finalized is due to the length of term originally offered from the Blackhawks.
«But I think Chicago will do all it can to go the max eight years while it wouldn't surprise me if (Bedard's agent) pushes for five,» LeBrun stated. «For five years, I could see something in the $10 million average-annual-value range, or just above. For seven or eight years, you're looking more at the $12 million-plus range. Bedard has all the leverage, no matter where it goes.»
The Blackhawks will want to keep Bedard in the crest as long as possible, as he is the anchor of the team.
The linchpin that could lead to the next Stanley Cup win for the Original Six squad.
It's a matter of time and patience for GM Kyle Davidson and the team now.
