Wednesday night, the Red Wings faced off against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh was up 4-0 by the end of the first period and had control of the game. During the second period, the Red Wings started to climb back into the game by scoring twice. At the start of the third period, the score was 4-2 in favor of the penguins. Detroit would score a goal and then with about three minutes left in the third, the Red Wings netted the tying goal to send the game to overtime.
While in overtime, something magical happened. Jake Wayman scored the game winning overtime to complete Detroits comeback after being down four goals. After getting the game winning goal, Wayman introduced the «griddy» to the NHL, and it wasn't the mascot. It was entertaining and fun to see this celly make its way to the NHL after serving as the main celebration in the NFL for the last season or two.
Now that Wayman broke the ice and has brought the griddy into the NHL, I'd expect to see it more often. It will probably even makes its way into the next NHL video game. Some people don't care for it, but to others it's another fun celly to add to the list.
