Troubling news strikes the Chicago Blackhawks organization and their owners
What do Connor Bedard, the Chicago Blackhawks, CHSN, and the Colorado Avalanche have in common, other than Comcast?
Absolutely nothing. The US market for clubs like the
Chicago Blackhawks saw a steep decline in viewership, no thanks to Comcast, CHSN, and Danny Wirtz, who haphazardly launched the network in October.
The Blackhawks' viewership declined by a stunning 78% thanks to the RSN that goes by the name of
CHSN. The regional sports network is co-owned by Wirtz, and Reinsdorf in order to avoid paying revenue out to networks to broadcast the game.
The 78% decline meant a loss of 400,000 viewers in the local area, as they left NBC Sports for an RSN that has cut no deal with Comcast.
According to Sports Business Journal, this is the kind of numbers ownership will have to deal with as they figure out not only how to build a winning roster, but making NHL games more accessible to their fans.
A notion they've failed at spectacularly this season.
The
Blackhawks finished last in the Central Division with a record of 25-46-11, under Interim Coach Anders Sorensen.
Unlike the Blackhawks, the Avalanche had no issues securing a deal with Comcast, which secured a 40% jump in the ratings according to Sports Business Journal. This was despite the deal being agreed on late in February.
Not only are the Avalanche a consistent issue for the Blackhawks in their own division, but they're beating them in the ratings, too!
Now, while
Nathan MacKinnon and company get to chase a cup, Bedard and the bunch will hang up their skates until training camp rolls around.
By then, we hope the CHSN debacle will be fully cleared up for good.
