Jonathan Toews reportedly turns his free agency decision direction to surprising Western Conference team
Former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is gearing up for an NHL return after a long period of time away, and he is reportedly eyeing one specific franchise.
Toews last played a game of hockey in 2022, appearing in 53 games with the Blackhawks before ultimately stepping away from the game he loved.
The reported cause was lingering effects of long COVID, and past issues with his Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.
He has been training hard, it was even
captured on video recently, for his NHL return in the 2025-26 season.
According to TSN insider and analyst Pierre LeBrun, one specific team is eyeing down Toews; and he's interested too.
Colorado Avalanche nearing deal with Jonathan Toews
According to LeBrun, the Avalanche are the leading team to acquire Toews' veteran presence in free agency.
Many believed the Winnipeg Jets would be the most ideal fit, as that's Toews' hometown team.
But according to LeBrun, Toews himself has revealed
7 teams with the Avalanche leading the way.
Jonathan Toews could ultimately form a great relationship with Colorado's captain,
Gabriel Landeskog.
Both suffered injuries that kept them out long-term, while having a prominent past of Stanley Cup wins.
Toews
recently revealed he will be making his free agency decision before the NHL draft, which is set to take place on June 27th.
