Per Sean Shapiro, the Dallas Stars nearly sent Jason Robertson to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a hypothetical deal to acquire Mitch Marner before they acquired Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes.
It was quite the year for new Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen, who began the year with the Colorado Avalanche before being moved in a deal nobody saw coming to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Because he wasn't going to commit to signing with the Hurricanes long term, he was instead traded to the Dallas Stars and then locked up to a multi-year contract extension.
But before Rantanen was sent to the Stars, there were reports that they were hoping to acquire Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Per NHL Trade Rumors, the Stars would have given the Maple Leafs Jason Robertson in return as part of a hypothetical trade.
According to Stars insider Sean Shapiro, Dallas explored the possibility of trading Robertson in order to pursue Mitch Marner, who eventually landed with the Vegas Golden Knights in a blockbuster sign-and-trade. For Dallas to make the cap space work, Robertson would have been the piece moved.
The deal never happened, but the rumor has created plenty of smoke around Robertson's future.

Right now, Robertson remains with the Stars and has 1 year left on his contract.
Jason Robertson remains on the trade block
With a year left on his contract, Robertson remains one of the more talked-about trade commodities.
Robertson has even been linked to the Chicago Blackhawks, who would love a former 40-goal scorer to play alongside 2023 1st overall pick Connor Bedard.
Last year with the Stars, Robertson had 80 points (35G, 45A), which easily would have been 1st overall among all Blackhawks scoring had he played in Chicago.
