The Chicago Blackhawks and Kyle Davidson are drafting 3rd overall, projections have them selecting forward Porter Martone, and he couldn't be more excited if he ends up being selected by the Hawks.
The NHL's Draft combine concluded recently, where
NHL teams and players congregate to get an idea of a player's abilities, endurance, and attitudes.
One of those players is projected to be selected 3rd overall, Porter Martone, of the OHL's Brampton Steelheads. The 98-point forward was interviewed during the combine this week and gave an interesting answer on where he expects to land in the draft.
Martone feels the team is building something special in the NHL with the youth movement we've seen take full effect, and with
Spencer Knight guarding the crease.
«I had a really good meeting with them,» Martone said. «They've got a great thing going there. I would be honored to be selected by the Blackhawks. You see the young core there - it's going to be something special in five or 10 years. You can really see them winning the Stanley Cup.»
Martone may not be Misa, but he offers a lot of the tangibles the Blackhawks could utilize on the ice.
This season, he scored 98 points (31-67) and has made a name for himself by playing a physical brand of hockey, getting in front of the net, and dirty spots, and finding ways of occupying the offensive zone.
While he's not the fastest skater, he could be a great power forward that the team is missing in the lineup currently, in terms of the future.
Nick Foligno may be the Captain, but he's past his prime and will have to make way for someone like Martone when the time comes.
If the Blackhawks fail to move up in the draft and miss out on Michael Misa, you can be assured they have a motivated power forward waiting in the wings in Porter Martone.
Although he may have to improve his skating in the AHL, there remains no question about his ability to backcheck and add offense with his great mid-range shot and his net-front presence battling for second chances, and capitalizing on a juicy rebound.
