Unique opportunity for the Chicago Blackhawks as two players land on NHL waivers Wednesday

It wasn't an overly active day on NHL waivers today, but there are now a pair of players who are up for grabs and can be claimed by any of the other NHL teams, or they'll otherwise be assigned to their respective AHL team.

The Calgary Flames placed forward Justin Kirkland on waivers, and the New York Rangers placed goalie Spencer Martin, who they just signed after his KHL contract was terminated, on waivers as well.

Both players would be an inexpensive opportunity for the Chicago Blackhawks to add depth both up front and in the net.

Kirkland has had trouble staying in the NHL, as he has mostly played in the minors. He was taken with the 62nd overall pick by the Nashville Predators in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

He's spent time with both the Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks, and he made his way back to Calgary last year, during which he played in 21 games.

So far this year, he's played in nine games with the Flames and has an assist. He has nine points (2G, 7A) in 39 career NHL games with the Ducks and Flames.

Martin was taken with the 63rd overall pick by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, and he's bounced around the NHL since then. His career includes stops with the Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Carolina Hurricanes.

He played for CSKA Moscow in the KHL this year, going 5-6-2.

He's 24-30-8 with a .883 SV% in 66 career NHL games.
