Longtime NHL Stanley Cup Champion Emotionally Announces His Retirement At Age 38
TJ Oshie has announced his retirement today, he can rest knowing he fulfilled his dream of winning a Stanley Cup and played over 1,000 games with both the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues.
TJ Oshie has announced his retirement from the NHL today. The event took place at Washington Harbour, where he addressed his adoring fans.
Oshie was a part of the Washington Capitals team, which defeated the upstart Vegas Golden Knights in 2018.
The Knights were a crew of misfits, while the Capitals seemed to be driven by destiny that year. Oshie would only win one Stanley Cup in the NHL, but he has secured the ultimate prize once in his lifetime.
Along with his one Stanley Cup, he's gained a nod to the All-Star Game in 2020, and a nomination for the Masterton Trophy in 2024.
His career totals are 695 points (302-393) and 69 points (34-35) in 109 playoff games.
Oshie was a key piece in the Washington Capitals' lineup, but only spent nine of the last years of his NHL career there.
He was originally drafted 24th overall in the 1st-round of the 2005 NHL Draft, and would begin his career with the St. Louis Blues during the 2008-09 season.
His gritty play style would later catch up with him down the road, as his health would decline, along with the number of games he'd played per year.
In 2021-22, he'd only play 44 games, while in 2022-23 be limited to 58, and last season he'd only play 52, scoring 25 points (12-13).
«I think probably the last time I was emotional about it was in the locker room after the game,» Oshie said. «I was fully prepared that could be my last game and I got the pictures taken of me taking my skates off to prove it. But I really haven't thought too much about it, honestly, besides that moment. Even before that moment, knowing how tough it was on really the whole team with me what I was going through, but actually saying the words out loud at the podium with my family in front of me and the Caps organization and my teammates, all my close friends, it was emotional and I'm so glad that it's over.»
Congratulations on your retirement, TJ Oshie.
