Connor McDavid's future with the Edmonton Oilers confirmed in eye-opening report by NHL insider Darren Dreger
It's back to back years now where the Edmonton Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Finals, and it's also repeating disappointment for sensations Connor McDavid and
Leon Draisaitl.
Following their elimination from the Cup Final, the Oilers
listed multiple players for trade, and it also led to many speculating about Connor McDavid's future with the Oilers.
McDavid is now 10 years into his NHL career, with little to show for, could he test free agency or request a move?
According to TSN analyst Darren Dreger, he knows where McDavid's future lies in Edmonton.
The analyst revealed that McDavid will likely want to decompress before discussing a future contract extension with general manager Stan Bowman and the Oilers.
I wouldn't say it's urgent, I think that Connor is going to want to take some time and decompress.
-Darren Dreger
He then mentioned how McDavid could opt out of contract talks as a whole:
Because it's still the heat of the moment and the disappointment is significant, there is the sexy side to this story. What if he waits? What if he just says, 'No, I'm taking a bigger look. I'll give you my thoughts as part of my exit interviews, and then let's see what management does with that, how will this team be different and better in training camp than the one that lost in a 6 game series to the Florida Panthers?'
According to Dreger's sources and belief, he will remain an Edmonton Oiler, but it's not confirmed how much longer he will be.
I believe he's staying in Edmonton, so we're not going to be talking about this in the fall. But what intrigues me is, what is the length of the contract? What is that term? Would he go 3-4 years, or would he just saddle up and take as much money as he can on an 8-year extension?
-Darren Dreger
A major factor in these discussions is his off-ice relationship with Leon Draisaitl, his best friend, who recently signed an 8-year extension to remain in Edmonton.
We know that Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are joined at the hip. These two are very, very close friends. And though you guys will tell me that it's a business, and you want to worry about the business side and winning, I think that does matter and I think that is a primary factor for McDavid.
Connor McDavid reveals he's not set on signing with the Oilers
While the length of his future tenure with the Oilers is undetermined, speculation can now be put to rest that he will be leaving shortly.
