Montreal Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov punished by Gary Bettman in NHL debut against the Chicago Blackhawks
Montreal Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov made his NHL debut on Monday night against the Chicago Blackhawks and he did not disappoint, but he did walk away with a fine from Gary Bettman and the NHL.
Demidov took his National Hockey League debut head on with a helmetless rookie lap, as we see all rookies take part in, but he has now been punished by the NHL for it.
It's every rookie's dream to do the no bucket rookie lap, and the NHL has found a way to profit off of it.
Montreal Canadiens forward fined
We have seen the same thing take place with
Connor Bedard, and the Blackhawks organization covered his fine handed to him.
It's considered a hazard for players to enter the ice with no helmet, and especially for rookies who just signed their pro contract days ago, according to the rule book of the league.
»It is mandatory for all players who entered the NHL beginning with the 2019-2020 season or later to wear their helmet during pre-game warm-up.
To be clear, all players who entered the league prior to the 2019-2020 season and who are currently playing are exempt from this mandate.»
The fine is hefty and $2500, which is also comparable to $5000, the maximum amount of fine we often see handed out for dangerous players and hits.
It may not seem like much, but rookies do not receive their full entry-level contract salary right away.
Comparing the two and their severities are quite laughable, but Bettman's pockets continue to get deeper.
We are hopeful to see an exception made for this rule in the future.
