The
Chicago Blackhawks fans will be impacted by the latest deal between the NHL and Rogers Communications.
The deal announced today saw Rogers and the
NHL sign a 12-year contract for Broadcasting rights, totalling $11 billion.
A coup for Gary Bettman and the NHL, as Rogers will televise the games on Sportsnet. But the communications company could be planning something tricky that could lock fans in the West out of their favorite team's games in a blackout.
According to YYZ Media, the Canadian company could sell a portion of the other NHL games to other companies, which could make more sense for Rogers economically.
But, does it make sense for the Blackhawks fans? No, it means another means of restricting access to their team.
In order for Rogers to recoup their investment, they will be selling a large portion of their games to other companies, which will change how games are viewed by fans in the Western Conference.
However, Canadian NHL fans will get significantly more games to view live.
TSN will be squeezed out of the picture after this is all finalized, and Jeff Bezos' Amazon Prime will look to get in on the action and purchasing a portion of these games from Rogers Communications.
The purpose? Well, you'll need Amazon Prime and a smart TV to view these games.
Given that fans have already been put through the wringer with the CHSN debacle, the Canadian side of the game is figuring out news way of wreaking havoc on fans wallets and viewing habits.
