According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars and GM Jim Nill are in dispute over money, which could lead to a trade of the pending RFA in the future.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman likes to drop juicy details on NHL stars when we least expect it.
The Dallas Stars and
Jason Robertson seem to be in dispute when it comes to Robertson's next contract.
The team is currently paying him $7.75 million AAV, and the former 80-point player wants to be rewarded for his production. He's been nothing but an exceptional star in the organization.
However, according to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, the two sides aren't finding common ground on what matters to GMs the most: money.
"I just think it comes down to the number. I think Dallas has an area they don't want to go over, and the question is, does Robertson want to go over that? I can't imagine they want to go over Rantanen, which is $12 million, so we'll see."
With the team already paying one forward (Mikko Rantanen) $12 million AAV, they don't have the room for more in the way of cap space.
If this persists, we could end up seeing Jason Robertson become a cap casualty, as he was thought to be once before.
Robertson scored 80 points (35-45) for the Dallas Stars this season on the team's 1st line.
At the end of his contract, Robertson will still be under team control as an RFA, and they could get a serious haul if they were to trade his rights to another organization if he refuses to sign an extension with the team.
Will Jim Nill and Jason Robertson take their latest negotiations down to the wire?
