Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings complete an intriguing trade today in hockey history
It was on this day in 1958 that the Red Wings acquired Gus "Old Hardrock" Mortson from the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations.
Both the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings have long histories and have traditionally been Original 6 rivals with one another, dating back decades to the years prior to the 1967 expansion.
A meaningful trade took place between the two teams on this day in 1958, as the Red Wings acquired Gus "Old Hardrock" Mortson from the Blackhawks for future considerations:
Mortson had been a 3x All-Star with the Blackhawks and earned several All-Star appearances earlier in his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But he would only play 38 games with the Red Wings and had a single assist during that time.
He later played in the OHL and IHL along with the OHA-Sr. League. He passed away in August of 2015 at the age of 90.
Red Wings and Blackhawks are familiar with high-profile players
Given that both teams celebrate their 100th year in the NHL this season, it's not surprising to know that multiple high-profile players have played on both sides of the rivalry.
For example, not many Blackhawks fans would have ever believed that a player like
Patrick Kane, who won 3 Stanley Cups with Chicago, would ever play for the Red Wings, but that's the current situation.
Additionally, former Blackhawk
Alex DeBrincat is also with the Red Wings and played a major part in recruiting Kane to Detroit.
Fans well remember
the stunning trade of Chris Chelios to the Red Wings in 1999, while Chicago fans were elated when Marian Hossa bolted from Detroit in 2009 and signed a long deal with the Blackhawks.
Notorious NHL enforcer Bob Probert also played on both sides of the rivalry, as did NHL Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay.
