Chicago Blackhawks trade draft pick for 6-foot-2 defenseman from the Los Angeles Kings today in hockey history
On this day in Chicago Blackhawks history, the team combined for a trade with the Los Angeles Kings, acquiring towering defenseman Doug Zmolek for a 3rd-round pick (Frantisek Kaberle).
The Chicago Blackhawks, on this day 27 years ago, combined with their Western Conference rivals, the Los Angeles Kings, for a trade.
The deal would be to acquire 6-foot-2 defenseman Doug Zmolek from the Kings in exchange for a 3rd-round pick.
That pick would later become
Frantisek Karblere, who would later go on to win a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes during the 2005-06 NHL season. left-winger, who was born in Czechia, would see his fortunes grow later in his career.
Although he played for the Los Angeles Kings at the beginning of his NHL journey, his career would conclude during the 2008-09 season. He'd end his professional career in the NHL, playing 30 games for the Hurricanes before heading home to play for HC Kladno.
The team that Jaromir Jagr owns at this point in time.
Zmolek was a former 7th overall pick in the 1989 NHL Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. The defenseman would arrive in Chicago during the 1988-89 season and play only two years in the Blackhawks uniform.
He'd play a total of 105 games and score 23 points (2-21), and would never be a key role player for the team.
The 6-foot-2 defenseman in his first year accumulated 102 PIMs, but he'd never win a Stanley Cup here.
It's disappointing looking back at the draft capital spent, and it all turns out for nothing.
But for the Carolina Hurricanes, who were never tangentially related to the deal, it looks like they won something here.
