Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins combine for sneaky trade involving top prospect
The
Blackhawks would send former 1st-round pick and 11th overall defenseman Victor Soderstrom to get a fresh start with the Boston Bruins.
Smart, two-way defenseman who projects to become possibly a top-pairing blueliner. Great puck-mover, good skater and has an excellent shot.
- Dobbers Prospects
It's apparent that Kyle Davidson was aware that he wouldn't sign with the Blackhawks, so he sent him packing to Boston.
There, he'll take his 53 games of NHL experience, where he's only scored 11 (1-10) during his entire career.
While the Blackhawks, in return, would receive prospect
Ryan Mast and a 7th-round pick.
We don't know much about Ryan Mast, who has only ever played in the AHL (44 games) and ECHL (47 games), but he's 'huge'.
Mast has only tallied 5 points (5 A) in that time frame and has never made it up the depth chart to even serve as a call-up compared to his counterparts.
So, after all of this examination, who won the trade?
"Mast has the size and aggressiveness to project him as a second- or third-pair defender with some power-play potential," said FCHockey scout Joseph Aleong.
In the long run, it looks like the Blackhawks could find a way to turn Ryan Mast into an NHLer if they play their cards right. The Bruins aren't great at developing talent, and the players who do rise through the ranks are often sat in favor of veterans as a win-now team.
The Blackhawks also acquired a pick that they can use as a bargaining tool, while Don Sweeney will have to find a way to turn Soderstrom into a legitimate AHLer or find a way to justify the trade by developing him correctly in Providence.
But given that Soderstrom is stuck in the SHL with Brynas IF under contract, it seems apparent the Hawks won this one.
