Blackhawks head coach fails to defend Connor Bedard
The referees during the New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks game last night were.. questionable. A lot of missed calls. The Blackhawks got away with a lot of things, such as hooks and holds and whatnot, but one thing stuck out.
In the corner of Chicago's defensive end,
Connor Bedard was getting jumped by New Jersey's
Simon Nemec. He took multiple shoves when he was on the ground.
Landon Slaggert came over to Nemec and yanked him off Bedard, and then gave him more pushes in the corner, but Slaggert was the one who headed to the penalty box.
The referees said that Bedard was holding onto Nemec's stick, and that's why no call was made. Bedard wouldn't have to hold onto any stick but his if Nemec wasn't on top of him.
No one person on the Hawks bench lifted a finger. Not even Anders Sorensen.
Sorensen was asked why he didn't lose it on the bench. He responded that losing your cool on the bench isn't going to help anything and that the call has already been made, justifying that you don't gain anything out of doing it.
"I just don't know what to gain out of it. They've made their call; they're probably not going to change it. You can try to talk to them in TV timeouts to get an explanation that way instead. Coming across yelling is probably not going to help the situation, right? Try to build a relationship and talk to them - I think that will go a longer way down the road."
Sorensen is wrong about not gaining anything. Your franchise player, teenager, future of this franchise, is being abused in the corner and no call was made. Instead, your guy, Slaggert, is going to the box, for stepping up and defending said player. Get mad. Yell at a ref. Do something.
Look at Joel Quenneville. Won multiple Stanley Cups with the Hawks. He gave a few refs a mouthful during his tenure when deserved. This one called for it, and Sorensen did nothing.
The problem is, he isn't fit to be an NHL Head Coach. He's only here because Luke Richardson got fired. There's «Interim» in his job title for a reason. Sorensen should be out the door after these final ten games and Kyle Davidson needs to find an actual coach to lead this team.
What happened to Bedard was ridiculous. And it's even more of a shame Sorensen didn't do anything about it.
