The Chicago Blackhawks have an issue, and it's with cap space being committed in the wrong places: non-roster players.

GM Kyle Davidson may be great at drafting, but his trading strategy may be for the birds.
During his time as GM for the Hawks, he's spent a good amount of the team's capital on veterans who don't produce enough to make the team competitive.
The contract of Tyler Bertuzzi, Teuvo Teravainen, and other players weigh down the team's productivity and salary cap space.
In addition to those underperformers, we have another problem to worry about: non-roster players.
This trade deadline, GM Kyle Davidson made a move to acquire defenseman Shea Weber's contract from the Utah HC which accounts for $7.87 million of the cap, while paying injured goalie Laurent Brossiot $3.3 million to recover.
They're also in the business of facilitating trades in order to acquire assets, such as the Mikko Rantanen trade Davidson retained $4.25 million for a third-round pick in the 2025 draft.
They're also retaining $2 million of defenseman Jake McCabe's salary until the end of the year, while also on the books for $2.5 million of Seth Jones until 2029-2030.
Also, he decided it was worthwhile to take on Josh Bailey's contract, which he would buy him out of the $1.167 million deal, and that finally will come off the books this off-season.
The amount of salary cap spent on meager returns is an issue for the Blackhawks, who under Davidson have spent like drunken sailors.
It's arguable that assets are valuable when it comes to making trades, but he's failed to make any major trades this year.
Instead, he's still got TJ Brodie who is on the books and could become a buyout candidate as he's been a healthy scratch since March 1st.
Once the retention spots are freed up, and Andreas Athansiou's contract ends, it'd give the Blackhawks a bit of leeway.
With the buyout hit coming off the books as well, the team will have $10.357 million in cap to work with.
For a rebuilding team, they need more and instead, Davidson has it invested in all the wrong places.
