A warning has been sent to the Blackhawks involving head coaching candidate Peter Laviolette
The Chicago Blackhawks could be in the market for a new head coach in July, and with the New York Rangers' recent firing of Peter Laviolette, GM Kyle Davidson has been cautioned against giving him a new job in the Windy City.
The
Chicago Blackhawks could do worse than Anders Sorensen, couldn't they? Sorensen delivered a 25-46-11 record, finishing 8th in the Central Division for the 2024-2025 season.
It's been speculated that the
Blackhawks could be hiring a new coach in July, and with Peter Laviolette on the hunt for a new job after he was fired in New York, fans are already urging against it.
Peter Laviolette seems to have a short shelf life wherever he goes, like another NHL coach, John Tortorella.
Laviolette punched above his weight in New York, winning a Presidents' Trophy with the Rangers during the 2023-2024 NHL season.
Soon, the team would fall back to earth, fail to make the playoffs, and finish 5th in the Metropolitan Division amidst regular roster turnover.
Laviolette finished a meager two seasons in New York, finishing with a .607 winning percentage, which isn't terrible. But this season for himself and the team was beyond redemption (39-36-7), which is why Drury fired him.
His record with the Rangers after being hired on June 13th, 2023? 94-59-11 and a .607 winning percentage. Not terrible, but not great either, as they only achieved the Easter Conference finals once in his tenure, and won one Presidents' Trophy.
Laviolette has developed a reputation as an intense coach with an ability to turn around underachieving teams in short order. He does have a limited shelf life; his tenure in Nashville was the longest of his career, and it was clear to me around the time the Predators fired him that it was time for a change after five-plus years.
Even though Anders Sorensen wasn't the answer in Chicago, Laviolette isn't either. He may have taken three teams to the Stanley Cup Finals, but he lost the locker room in New York like he has in other cities he's coached.
Be wary, traveler, and stay far away from Peter Laviolette.
