When the NHL free agency began many Hockey Insiders predicted defenceman John Klingberg wouldn't last long in free agency. The 29 year-old had a very good year last season putting up 47 points in 74 games. Klingberg has also never put up fewer than 40 points in a full season in his career. So many were shocked he wasn't getting signed.
Klingberg himself was obviously unhappy with the way things were going firing agent Petter Wallen, and hiring Newport Sports to represent him. However Klingberg shouldn't of even ended up in free agency if not for his agent being greedy.
It was revealed that just before Christmas last season the Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill offered Klingberg whooping 8-year contract extension with the the Dallas Stars worth $58,000,000 million dollars, making $7,250,000 annually.
This would of been a very nice pay-day for Klingberg a day showed that the Dallas Stars wanted to keep him long-term. However Klingberg's agent Petter Wallen would advise Klingberg not to sign being greedy he told Klingberg to wait till free agency where Wallen believed Klingberg could get a 8 year $64,000,000 dollar contract instead.
Klingberg chose to wait and that deal obviously didn't come to futrition and now instead of a long-term deal, Klingberg would end up only getting a one year $7,000,000 million dollar deal with the Anaheim Ducks.
What did we learn from this boys and girls? when someone offers you $58,000,000 dollars you take that deal!
