We've just received confirmation on where Erik Karlsson will be traded to: It's a contender
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson has demanded a trade to an NHL contender and according to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, a team like the Carolina Hurricanes could be in the mix, leaving us to question is if Kyle Dubas can pull it off before puck drop in October?
The Pittsburgh Penguins are in the midst of a rebuild and are selling off their top pieces in the lineup. We could very well see a former Stanley Cup be fully disassembled, aside from
Sidney Crosby.
After playing the last four seasons in San Jose and Pittsburgh,
Karlsson wants to be traded to a Stanley Cup contender.
Erik Karlsson to an NHL Contender? When?
NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has dropped the juicy details on what the offseason move could look like, while Karlsson waits for the puck drop in 2025-26.
According to Seravalli, that leaves a very small bit of wiggle room for Kyle Dubas, meaning only the Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars, and the only non-contending team on the list: the Detroit Red Wings.
Fortunately for Dubas, who was once dubbed the wunderkind of all NHL GMs, he still has plenty of time to work out the details with Karlsson's next team, in order to have him agree to waive his NMC, and get another asset out the door for more prospects and draft picks.
Karlsson is going to be an expensive acquisition, making $11.5 million AAV, but has seen his better days after his 101-point season in San Jose.
Since then, he's been a 50-point player the last two years in Pittsburgh.
Kyle Dubas was once touted as one of the best GMs in the league. If he can't pull off a Karlsson deal by October, it's a wash.
