A tragic accident happened, robbing the life of hockey player Gabriel Martin, in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, and the community is in mourning.
Gabriel Martin was 19 years old, too young to be buried by his parents. Nevertheless, that is how this scenario played out.
"The vehicles stopped to go around it, but the driver with Gabriel would not have seen the trailer. Gabriel's side was completely crushed and he died of a hemorrhage in his right leg, explains Mélissa Bélanger, a close friend of the family who supported Mrme Lortie since the tragedy.
The accident would occur as Martin, a passenger in a utility van owned by the construction company he was working for, was hit by a platform truck. The passenger side which Gabriel was on was crushed.
He'd be rushed to the hospital, and despite their best efforts, Martin would pass away.
"At the hospital, they told me about the maneuvers, the blood transfusions and then they told me that Gabriel had died. Samuel [his twin brother] started crying, my daughter was in shock and I was trying to breathe', testifies the victim's mother.
The 19-year-old played hockey in the Boisbriand and Sainte-Thérèse Minor Hockey Association, and was beloved by his friends and community he built during his time in the league.
He had played with many of his teammates since he was 6 years old. The news would devastate his family, friends, and teammates as he was taken from them all too young.
His brother (a twin) and a dozen hockey players would show up to his bedside in to visit him one last time.
"Young people will wear a badge with their name and number for all matches next season. We are also going to organize a vigil at the arena to let balloons fly away to let him leave his place where he liked to meditate with his friends', says Mrme Belanger.
The driver involved in the accident was also injured, but may face criminal charges depending on how the Mirabel Police Department decides to rule.
They have confirmed with TVA that there will be an investigation into the accident before any decisions are made.
We offer our deepest condolences to the Martin family, friends and teammates in this difficult period.
