The Edmonton Oilers re-signed defenseman Evan Bouchard to a new long-term deal, but before that, they reportedly wanted Darnell Nurse, who is under contract until 2030, to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a potential move.
The Edmonton Oilers have re-signed one of their top defenseman, getting Evan Bouchard to sign a 4-year contract that pays him a whopping AAV (average annual value) of $10.5 million.
He's now the highest paid defenseman on the team, surpassing the $9.5 million AAV of Darnell Nurse.
But before the contract was signed, Oilers GM Stan Bowman, who once ran the Chicago Blackhawks before resigning in disgrace in 2021 after the Kyle Beach sexual assault scandal came to light, reportedly approached Nurse about waiving his no-trade clause.
Per NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman on his most recent '32 Thoughts' podcast, the Oilers asked Nurse to waive his no-trade clause, but were turned down.

Nurse's current contract was given to him by now-former Oilers general manager Ken Holland, who now oversees their divisional foe Los Angeles Kings.
He's under contract through 2030.
Just like the current financial commitments to both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, the Oilers now have major financial commitments to both top defensemen in Bouchard and Nurse.
