Chicago sports mourns the devastating loss of a White Sox icon at the age of 44
Tragic news to report, as former Chicago White Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks passed away too young at the age of 44.
Bobby Jenks helped the
Chicago White Sox win the World Series in 2005. Jenks was a two-time All-Star.
The former White Sox pitcher tragically passed away at the age of 44, in Sintra, Portugal, according to the team.
Jenks, 44, had been diagnosed with a form of stomach cancer called adenocarcinoma. He'd spent six seasons with the
Chicago White Sox , from 2005-10. He'd played with the Boston Red Sox in 2011.
He'd play his entire MLB career as a reliever, with a record of 16-20, with a 3.53 ERA and 173 saves.
"We have lost an iconic member of the White Sox family today," White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. "None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of Game 4 in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago. He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle, and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend and teammate. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts."
Jenks would later move to Portugal and would be diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf. It'd later evolve into blood clots, which would travel into his lungs, and he would later be diagnosed with adenocarcinoma.
He'd undergo treatment for his cancer and the White Sox would offer support:
In February, as Jenks was being treated for the illness, the White Sox posted "We stand with you, Bobby" on Instagram, adding in the post that the club was "thinking of Bobby as he is being treated."
Jenks was a beloved part of the White Sox 2005 team, which helped end the team's 88-year World Series title drought.
He'd be a clutch player in Game 3 of the ALDS, clinching the series win and earning a save against the Boston Red Sox. Later followed up with a Game 4 victory against the Houston Astros in the World Series.
The White Sox would honor Jenks with a video, with Paul Konerko complimenting his pitching skills, embarrassing good hitters during his career.
Jenks is survived by his wife Eleni Tzitzivacos, kids Zeno and Kate, along with four kids from a prior marriage, Cuma, Ryan, Nolan, and Jackson.
We send our deepest condolences to the Jenks family, friends, and teammates in these difficult, and trying times.
