According to Rick Dhaliwal, Vancouver Canucks have granted goaltender Mikey DiPietro and his agent permission to talk to other teams in hopes of facilitating a trade. DiPietro is only 23 years old, which makes my mind flip into gm mode a little bit. What if the Blackhawks rolled the dice and took a chance on DiPietro?
Lets first look at the stats. Dipietro played one game for Vancouver this past season, allowing 3 goals on 17 shots faced. In the AHL this past season, DiPietro appeared in 34 games. In those games, DiPietro had a save percentage of .901 and a goals against average of 2.95. DiPietro had a record of 15-13-4.
I think DiPietro would be a very low risk high reward type of acquisition for the Blackhawks. It is very common for goaltender prospects in the NHL to take multiple years to develop. Most of the quality goalies in today's game have had their struggles before finding their confidence. Remember that the Blackhawks drafted Corey Crawford in the 2003 NHL Draft and it took him until the 2010-2011 season to break into the NHL.
Kevin Lankinen and Colin Delia have also moved on from the organization, leaving the Blackhawks with Petr Mrazek and Alex Stalock slated to lead the goaltending this season. It is highly unlikely that either goalie will be here for the long haul, which makes DiPietro a great option to split time between Rockford and Chicago to develop. What do you guys think? Should the Blackhawks try to bring in Mikey DiPietro?
