For the past several months, Patrick Kane has been undergoing rehabilitation following hip resurfacing surgery completed on June 1st.
The surgery concluded after the New York Rangers were eliminated in the first round, marking the beginning of a challenging recovery process.
Originally anticipated to be sidelined for four to six months, Kane appears to be well ahead of schedule and is now poised to sign a new contract.
According to Jeffrey Ade, a blogger for the Buffalo Sabres fan base, it seems that Kane will sign a two-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres in the range of $3.5 to $4 million per season, returning home where he was born in Buffalo.
This sentiment has also been echoed by other Sabres media members, including Chad DeDominicis, who expressed that a two-year deal is on the table.
Given that the Sabres currently rank in the bottom third of the salary cap standings with a projected cap hit of $76.8 million, they could acquire him outright without needing to move any money off the payroll. Their projected cap hit is currently $6.63 million with a 23-man roster and 43 out of 50 contracts.
Ongoing discussions revolve around how Kane will perform after undergoing this surgery, as other NHL players who have had similar procedures have not fared well. For instance,
Nicklas Backstrom is now sidelined for the remainder of the season due to health issues.
There is a degree of risk; however, on the flip side, Kane could experience little to no issues in terms of mobility and playing ability. If he can quickly regain his form with the Sabres' offence, it is quite plausible that he could provide the boost that this beleaguered franchise needs to end their playoff drought.
