Controversy erupts in the Mitch Marner saga and the Golden Knights face tampering charges from the NHL

A controversy erupted in the Mitch Marner saga as the Vegas Golden Knights could face some serious tampering charges from the NHL.
Just ahead of the first round of the draft, reports started to come out about a potential blockbuster trade sending Marner from Toronto to Vegas. For months, Marner had been loosely linked to the Golden Knights, but mainly through whispers that he might sign there as a free agent down the line.
However, GM Brad Treliving has no other choice if he doesn't want to lose him for nothing in return: he must trade him.
After reports confirmed the player wouldn't sign in Toronto and would test the free agency market this summer, many trade rumors emerged, with the Golden Knights apparently very interested in getting him.
But that's where things get messy. On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a bit of a bombshell.
According to him, if the Leafs actually pull the trigger on a deal with Vegas, Toronto could accuse the Golden Knights of tampering unless the Leafs get a player or two in return.
He also added that he has no proof this will happen.
In his own words:
"People aren't going to be happy with this but I'm going to say it anyway. There's been some talk that if Marner goes to Vegas, the Maple Leafs will go after Vegas for tampering.
I have no proof that Vegas is guilty of anything. But it is a time around the league where teams are extremely sensitive about it and... the NHL is itching to try and make an example out of someone.
Once again... I don't have any proof that Vegas is guilty of anything but, if they make a deal with Toronto and send a good player or two, I'm betting any chance the Maple Leafs file for tampering goes away."

For now, it'll be up to the NHL to decide if there's an actual case here. If Vegas is found guilty, serious consequences could follow.
