NHL analyst David Pagnotta has suggested that the New York Rangers could begin thinking of trading Artemi Panarin if they aren't able to get off to a good start this year after missing the playoffs last year.

There wasn't much that went according to plan for the New York Rangers last year, as they missed the postseason only a season after winning the President's Trophy and advancing to Game 6 of the ECF against the Florida Panthers.
Not only were there several reports of in-house dissent against GM Chris Drury and frustration of how he handled the trade of now-ex captain Jacob Trouba, but coach Peter Laviolette lost the room and paid for it with his job after the season was over.
Star forward Artemi Panarin, who signed a 7 year contract with the Rangers in the summer of 2019, is entering the last year of the deal.
Per analyst David Pagnotta, the Rangers could think about trading Panarin if they get off to a slow start this year and can't get him to commit to a new extension.
David Pagnotta: The guy I'm really curious about with the Rangers is Artemi Panarin; what's gonna happen with him?; if it's status quo do they start to get a head start on trade discussions involving Panarin? - Campbell vs Gallo (8/18)

Panarin had 89 points (37G, 52A) this year for the Rangers, one of the few bright spots.

Panarin seemed to recognize last year was their last chance at the Stanley Cup

Before last season began, Panarin seemed to recognize that it would be their last prime chance to win the Stanley Cup with the roster as it was previously constructed.
Unfortunately for Panarin and the Rangers, they weren't able to compete for the Cup, missing the playoffs and moving toward an uncertain future.
The 2024 postseason may have been New York's best chance for their 1st Cup since 1994, and now it could be a longer wait before they're back in that kind of contention.
