Chicago Blackhawks completing substantial move involving 24-year-old goaltender Spencer Knight
The Chicago Blackhawks are currently expected to finish last in the league next year.
All for good reason, though.
The kids are going to lead the team for the first time.
Sure, there are a few middle-aged to veteran players in the lineup, but the majority are the young studs preparing to take the reins and lead this next generation of Blackhawks.
There are going to be so many silly mistakes being made, but it's a key part of the learning curve.
Most importantly, these guys are going to be responsible for building one thing in the Windy City: the culture. And they're already doing it.
When
Frank Nazar was asked as to why he re-signed, he said that it was because of the culture.
The 21-year-old wants to win, and anyone smart would see that in the next few years, this team could be competing for a championship.
Nazar is a key rebuilding piece and will shape this team for the next eight years that he's here. His contract extension saw a cap hit of $6.59 million for the next seven years after this upcoming season. For what he could possibly be with his speed, hands, and shot, that is going to look like a steal when the cap goes up.
Nazar basically took a pay cut of about one to two million dollars per year from what he should've gotten paid.
There isn't necessarily a ceiling on him yet, but if he somehow exceeds it, the contract will have Kyle Davidson looking like a king.
Elliotte Friedman reveals juicy details on the Chicago Blackhawks' next move
It would be one thing if one player said that they wanted to be here. But Nazar isn't the only one.
Up-and-rising goalie
Spencer Knight, at the end of last year, mentioned that he wants to be a Blackhawk and that the culture is a lead-driving piece in that. On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman said that he wonders if the Hawks will take a run at the 24-year-old netminder and get him locked up before the summer ends like they did with Nazar.
Can GMKD use his negotiation skills to possibly get Knight on a cheaper deal too?
On top of all this,
Alex Vlasic is locked up for the next five years at only $4.6 million per season at a hometown discount.
Vlasic has looked the best out of the defensemen so far, especially with his size, and that's saying a lot because the Blackhawks arguably have the best defensive prospect core in the whole league.
Of course, you have to throw in
Ryan Donato, who, after coming off a career year with 31 goals, is signed for the next four years at only $4 million per season.
The next step in this process is obviously
re-signing Connor Bedard, but after this upcoming season comes to a close, Davidson needs to look into signing a big fish in free agency.
Between the culture and the pay cuts the players are taking because they want to be a Hawk, this could start to look like the Florida Panthers, and that's exciting.
The only question is can Davidson's extension skills translate to actually bringing someone into Chicago? Time will tell.
