It appears that Connor McDavid's fate with the Oilers was just decided, amid uncertainty surrounding his future in Edmonton.
Unless he signs an extension ahead of next offseason, Connor McDavid will be the most important player to hit free agency next season, despite top talents like Jack Eichel, Lane Hutson, Kyle Connor, Kirill Kaprizov, and many more being available as well.
Oilers make decision on McDavid
For the Oilers, the decision has already been made: the team will look to sign him as soon as possible while respecting the captain's own timing.
Edmonton GM Stan Bowman opened up on that topic in a recent interview:
"We're very eager to do that whenever they're ready. I think Connor has earned the right to choose when he wants to get into the details of it, and we're ready right now, he knows that.

Now, in a new development, it appears that McDavid could end up signing before the end of the summer, meaning his future in Edmonton is confirmed.
Indeed, TSN's Ryan Rishaug stated that he believes the Oilers will make a deal happen with McDavid later this summer, in August.
He added that the player will likely sign a four-year deal in Edmonton:
Signing short-term deals will surely become a trend in the NHL for superstars. After Auston Matthews' four-year, $13M AAV deal, players will be interested in signing shorter deals to stay on course with the salary cap rising.
However, McDavid could decide to change his mind, especially if Bowman keeps putting his head in the sand about which lineup areas to bolster.
In my opinion, the Oilers must get a goalie if they want to see McDavid agree to sign a deal soon.
