Things were not going well for the Edmonton Oilers in the early goings of Game 4 against the Los Angeles Kings, who they are battling for the 4th straight year in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Kings led 1-0 after the opening period and looked like they were heading for a crucial win that would have given them a 3-1 series advantage. But the Oilers enjoyed a dramatic comeback win, tying the game late in regulation and then winning after Leon Draisaitl scored a PPG in overtime.
The series is now deadlocked at 2-2, heading back to Los Angeles for Game 5.
During the 1st intermission, the Oilers held a closed-door players only meeting, according to Sportsnet; the only players who were reportedly not present were Connor McDavid, Draisaitl, and Mattias Janmark, along with coach Kris Knoblauch.
Commentator Ron MacLean quipped:
The meeting is with everybody but McDavid, Draisaitl, Kris Knoblauch, and Janmark. I guess he's off the hook.
The meeting was to demand elevated play from the Oilers players, including ex-Blackhawks forward Corey Perry, who would later score Edmonton's 1st goal of the game.
It looks like whatever was said in the meeting paid off, as the Oilers sent their fans at Rogers Place home happy with a thrilling 4-3 OT win.
The work isn't done, however. The Oilers cannot afford to get off to another poor start in Game 5 at Crypto.com Arena, where the Kings beat them in consecutive contests early in the series before traveling to Edmonton.
Whoever wins Game 5 will return to Rogers Place with a chance to punch their ticket to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Should that team be the Kings, it would be the 1st time that they've advanced since their 2014 Stanley Cup victory and the 1st in four tries against the Oilers.
