Former Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane is being joined by another former Blackhawk, Michael Leighton, with the Red Wings, who takes over as their new goalie coach.
A couple of former Chicago Blackhawks are teaming up with the hated former divisional foe Detroit Red Wings to try and get the club back to the postseason for the 1st time in nearly a decade.
Former Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Michael Leighton arrived in Detroit today as their goalie coach, joining forces with Patrick Kane once again:
Leighton was taken by Chicago with the 165th pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, and played parts of 2 separate eras of Blackhawks hockey. He began his career when the Blackhawks were essentially an afterthought in the NHL, and returned shortly on the heels of Chicago's dynasty, which included 3 Stanley Cup wins.
One of those Cup wins was in 2010 when Leighton was with the Flyers.
Leighton also played 88 games for the AHL affiliate Rockford Ice Hogs after he came back to the Blackhawks organization, winning 50 of them and also picking up 10 shutouts.
Patrick Kane chose to re-sign with Detroit
While there may have been dreams of Blackhawks fans that Kane
Kane would return home to Chicago to mentor 2023 1st overall Draft pick
Connor Bedard, those dreams were dashed when Kane re-signed with the Red Wings for another year.
Speaking of former Blackhawks, the Red Wings also have ex-Hawk
Alex DeBrincat, with whom Kane is good friends; their sons are also good friends with one another.
While Kane will eventually have his No. 88 sweater retired in Chicago, Blackhawks fans will cringe knowing that he spent a few years with the Red Wings.
