The hockey world mourns the sudden loss of an NHL legend at the age of 84
The hockey community is mourning following the devastating loss of a former Chicago Blackhawk and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman at the age of 84 following a statement from the NHL.
A three-time NHL All-Star who paved his name in the NHL by being named the second Philadelphia Flyers captain in team history has sadly left us far too soon.
Ed Van Impe passes away at 84
Van Impe spent six years playing minor pro hockey with the WHL's Sr. Calgary Stampeders and the AHL's Buffalo Bisons before signing his first ever NHL contract which came with the Chicago Blackhawks, at the young age of 26.
The defenseman may have been small, 5-foot-10, but his 205-lb big frame was dominant in his rookie season, finishing second in Calder Trophy voting in the final season of the Original Six Era.
He was a key contributor in the Flyers' back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 1974 and 1975, having seven points alongside a plus/minus rating of +18 throughout 34 games in the two playoff runs.
'A strong and dependable blueliner, Ed was an important piece to Philadelphia's back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975.
Ed would be dealt to Pittsburgh midway through the 1975-76 campaign, and would retire at the conclusion of the 1976-77 season, after 700 regular-season games played.
We send our deepest sympathies to Ed's family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time.' The
NHL wrote in a statementWe would like to take this moment to offer our sincerest condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of Ed throughout this difficult time.
Rest in Peace, Ed Van Impe.
