We regret to announce the passing of a former member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings at the age of 88.

The Toronto Maple Leafs organization has shared the saddened announcement on X Tuesday afternoon.
We mourn the passing of Alex Faulkner. Alex played one game with the Maple Leafs in 1961 and was the first player born in Newfoundland to appear in an NHL game. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Faulkner was the first hockey player to make the NHL from Newfoundland.
The Hockey president of Newfoundland and Labrador issued a heartfelt statement, as shown below:
I think for us, as a hockey family across this province, this is a big blow. I think as well, you're losing someone who broke a lot of ground as the first Newfoundlander to play in the NHL.

He's a once in a generation type of a fella. To accomplish something back in the day, it was incredibly hard to make the National Hockey League.

And he was an inspiration to many young people across our province.
Faulkner would play in 101 games during his NHL career, totaling 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists).
We would like to send our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy, in the passing of a historic member who paved a path for many to join the game of hockey from Newfoundland.
May you rest in peace, Alex Faulkner.
