The Chicago Blackhawks are buying out a $7.5M veteran defenseman

A recent report has confirmed that Chicago Blackhawks fans will never get to see a 35-year old defenseman at the United Center again, as a buyout is taking place.
According to a report from Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, Blackhawks defenseman T. J. Brodie is set to be bought out of his $3.75M AAV contract that has one year remaining.
With the youth movement in full swing for the roster, Brodie was unfortunately the odd man out this past season and would certainly prefer to spend the last few remaining years of his NHL career in an NHL lineup.
The former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman was signed by the Blackhawks in free agency on July 1st in 2024, to serve as a reliable placeholder in the lineup while prospects develop.
Now, he is a 'stone cold lock' to be bought out this summer.
As his aging on a poor Blackhawks roster was shown, he found himself out of the lineup since March 1st.
Brodie would play 54 games this past season and tally up 10 points, while having a plus/minus of -18.

According to a New York Rangers analyst, he could find himself a new home in the big apple.
Buying out Brodie would ultimately be a cap relief while opening up a valuable roster spot that could be soaked up by the developing youth.
The Blackhawks would pay the 35-year old defenseman $3.25M in 2025, and $258K in 2026.
While Brodie likely served as an off-ice mentor for the youth in Chicago, his time has sadly expired as the rebuild is near completion.
