Mitch Marner signing with the Chicago Blackhawks: A major development and we finally have our answer
In a recent column by The Athletic, Blackhawks team reporter Scott Powers addressed general manager Kyle Davidson's plans for July 1st free agency and we finally have our official answer for Mitch Marner's fate of signing in Chicago.
With the
NHL free agency window officially opening up on July 1st, the Blackhawks have many moves to be made to provide
Connor Bedard support in what will be his third season in the league.
According to a recent report from Scott Powers, the Blackhawks appear to be out on the biggest fish in free agency,
Mitch Marner.
Powers notes that the Blackhawks have a significant amount of cap space, and that we're talking the most out of any NHL team entering free agency on July 1st.
Simply noting that if there is a bidding war, nobody else will stand a chance.
"How much term and cap space they are willing to invest in a player
The Blackhawks will have more cap space than almost any team entering free agency. They could probably sign a few players by simply being the highest bidder."
- Scott Powers
With a large amount of funds available, the Blackhawks are shying away from acquiring Bedard, a star-studded talent linemate.
Mitch Marner's fate in signing with the Chicago Blackhawks has been confirmed
Powers notes that the Blackhawks will not invest in an expensive player as they are looking out for their future, Connor Bedard and
Frank Nazar, who will need new contracts shortly.
"The Blackhawks won't do that, though. They're mindful of the future contracts they have ahead for Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar and so on. But maybe there's a happy medium for the Blackhawks where they can still explore free agency. We'll see."
- Scott Powers
With the NHL salary cap going up a substantial amount next season, and already a generous amount of cap space available, it's disappointing to hear that the Blackhawks will once again be sitting ducks.
