The Toronto Maple Leafs and
Mitch Marner divorce didn't take long to materialize. Speculation began to surface that Marner would leave his hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
After refusing to sign a new deal and looking to head into July to test free agency, he'll be the most sought-after forward in the market. We should expect Marner to field plenty of suitors.
But, given the demands for his next contract, it'll be difficult to see who could sign him to a new contract. According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, it could be the Vegas Golden Knights who sign the 102-point forward.
GM Kelly McCrimmon is always aiming high for his next signing, and has come away with superstar after superstar, signing
Mark Stone and
Max Pacioretty in their primes.
Now, the Vegas Golden Knights could be poised to sign Marner, but in order to do so, they'll have to find the salary cap space to do so, with only $9.165 million available to work with.
The Golden Knights could end up signing Marner to a short-term deal in order to make the money work. Which is often contrary to how superstars find new homes in the NHL, typically through deals extending 7 years or longer.
Adding
Mitch Marner could be a game-changer for the team and put them back into Stanley Cup contention after a disappointing run in the playoffs this year.
Although Vegas remains a favorite for Marner, there will be other suitors, including the
Utah Mammoth, and the
Los Angeles Kings, who want to take their lineup to the next level with #16 in the top-six.
