Blackhawks fans can get to know new defenseman Ryan Mast, who was acquired from the Boston Bruins yesterday in a trade for Victor Soderstrom.

The Chicago Blackhawks pulled off a trade with the Boston Bruins yesterday, sending the rights to Victor Soderstrom to Boston and picking up defenseman Ryan Mast and a 2025 7th round draft pick in return.
Soderstrom was originally acquired by the Blackhawks from the Utah Mammoth as well as Aku Raty and the contract of Shea Weber in exchange for a 5th round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
He had been taken with the 11th overall pick by the Arizona Coyotes, now known as the Utah Mammoth, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
Meanwhile, Mast has appeared in 44 games over the last 2 years with the AHL's Providence Bruins, the affiliate of the Bruins, after being taken 181st overall by the Bruins in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
Mast is originally from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, an affluent suburb of Detroit. At 6'5" and 195 lbs, he's physically imposing but is also known for his puck moving abilities.
He had just 5 assists in 37 games this year with the Providence Bruins, but previously had 30 points (8G, 22A) in 51 games in 2022-23 with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL.
He would appear in 168 games with the Sting, scoring 72 points (18G, 44A). He also played 47 games for the ECHL's Maine Mariners with 16 points (5G, 11A).
His scouting report via RecruitScouting reads as follows:
Mast's stretch passes are a great asset. He is able to gather the puck in his own-end; take a stride or two, assess and deliver accurate and firm two-line passes onto the tape of his forwards. His passes are very hard and well directed, attributed to his obvious physical strength and both timing/passing vision. The angles on his passes are impressive too. He's able to dish 45-degree passes through multiple layers of defence with consistency.
