Former NHL Stanley Cup Champion receives devastating diagnosis of stage 3 CTE one year after his passing

Devastating news behind the death of former Stanley Cup Champion Chris Simon has been revealed by his family after a study from the Concussion Legacy Foundation was concluded.
A former Chicago Blackhawks forward who spent seventeen seasons in the NHL amongst various teams has been diagnosed with stage 3 (of 4) CTE after his death.
Known as a gritty player with over 2,000 penalty minutes, Simon tragically passed away on March 18th in 2024.
His family is now speaking out after the conclusion of various concussion testing results done by the Concussion Legacy Foundation.
According to the family of Chris, he suffered with daily headaches, memory loss, loss of hearing, impulsivity, anxiety, and also paranoia.
«Mr. Simon had severe CTE pathology in areas of the brain involved with cognition and mood regulation, and it is likely CTE contributed to his memory problems, depression, and apathy,» said Dr. Ann McKee, chief of neuropathology for the VA Boston Healthcare System and director of the Boston University CTE Center and UNITE Brain Bank.

19 of 20 players studied at Boston University have had CTE, including Bobby Hull, Ralph Backstrom, Stan Mikita, Derek Boogaard, and Bob Probert.
CTE and hockey have been tied together for many years, but NHL commissioner Gary Bettman still refuses to admit it.
With the ongoing illegal hits in the NHL, we can only hope the NHL Department of Player Safety properly disciplines to limit the damage of CTE, and long-lasting effects.
