Announcement from the NHL Department of Player Safety confirms a major suspension is likely incoming
A major suspension is likely to be handed out today following an announcement by the NHL Player Safety involving New Jersey Devils center Paul Cotter, who threw an illegal check to the head on New York Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech.
Paul Cotter has been trending for what may be the first time in his career, but it's not for the right reasons.
Islanders' Pelech left the game just six minutes into the second period following the hit from Paul Cotter, which was deemed illegal. Head coach Patrick Roy was unable to provide an update on his defenseman, causing concern for what is likely to be a concussion.
Cotter is considered a first-time offender, as he has not been suspended in his 217-game NHL career so far, but this does mark his second match penalty received for an illegal check to the head.
The Devils only have two games remaining this season, meaning the team will be down a forward for the playoffs if his suspension is long-term.
Despite him not being a 'repeat offender' in the suspension world, he's known for throwing dangerous nonchalant hits that target head contact.
We can assume he will be suspended for roughly 2-4 games, comparing it to past collisions similar to his hit on Pelech.
