Chicago Blackhawks' Connor Bedard returns home to Vancouver in the midst of stalled contract negotiations
Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks returned home to Vancouver in the midst of his stalled contract negotiations.
The 2023 first overall pick is entering the final year of his entry-level contract. While most teams prefer to have their franchise players locked up before the final contract year begins, both Bedard and the Blackhawks appear comfortable waiting.
This upcoming season will be crucial, not just for Bedard, but for the entire Chicago organization. The team is coming off a difficult 2024-25 season and now begins a new era under head coach Jeff Blashill. The focus in Chicago isn't on contracts; it's on bouncing back on the ice.
Bedard Back Home In Vancouver For Summer Training Ahead Of Crucial Season
If Bedard comes ready to perform at the start of the regular season, he could be in a great position to ask for a much higher salary.
Frank Seravalli offered insight into the cautious approach both parties are taking in the negotiations:
"I doubt [the Blackhawks lock Bedard's extension before the season starts]. I think from both ends. From Bedard's end, I don't know that he'd want to jump right now. From the Blackhawks end, I don't know that they'd be rushing unless they see a true value play and opportunity."
"I'd want to see more of what Bedard is ready to do at the NHL level. Cap space is no issue, but [Chicago'd] want to get that deal right."
While he's been clear about wanting to stay in Chicago, he's also made it clear that extension talks aren't at the top of his priorities list as training camp nears.
