Chicago Blackhawks complete a trade involving 107-point forward today in hockey history
A historic trade was completed on this day with the Chicago Blackhawks that saw Jeremy Roenick sent to the Arizona Coyotes, in exchange for a 1997 1st-round pick, Craig Mills, and Alexei Zhamnov.
The
Chicago Blackhawks may have completed one of their worst trades as a franchise on this day, 29 years ago.
The deal sent superstar forward and now Hall of Famer,
Jeremy Roenick, to the Arizona Coyotes. The center was in the hunt for a contract that paid him $4 million AAV.
Instead of paying him what he was worth, the Blackhawks would opt to save salary cap space and would send him to the Coyotes for depth, plus a 1st-round draft pick, which became Ty Jacobs.
The Blackhawks had assumed that Zhamnov would be the next Sergei Federov, but would instead be a reliable contributor, but would never compare to the former Stanley Cup champion.
Zhamnov's Future & Roenick Comes To Terms in Arizona
Before the season began, Zhamnov and the Blackhawks would battle it out for a new contract, and he'd hold out for eight games until the Blackhawks would produce a five-year $3 million AAV deal.
Zhamnov would play eight years in the Windy City and would never go below 40+ points in production. He played 528 games in Chicago and scored 424 points total in a Blackhawks uniform.
Roenick would sign with the Coyotes with no issue and would have a stellar 69-point (29-40) in Arizona, making an immediate impact in the lineup. The former Blackhawks RFA had found a new home, and the team saved $1 million on the cap, but they gave up a fan favorite.
