On this day in hockey history, the Chicago Blackhawks acquired a right-handed defenseman from the Boston Bruins on the trade market.

As the Hawks' Centennial season gives fans a reason to look back at the franchise's rich history, we rewind 73 years to the day Chicago brought in Ed «Sonny» Kryzanowski from Boston in exchange for cash.
Kryzanowski's journey to the NHL was anything but ordinary. Born and raised in Fort Frances, Ontario, he was recognized as one of the most exceptional all-round athletes to ever come out of that community, excelling in swimming, football, and baseball. But hockey was where he truly made his mark.

Remembering Former NHLer Ed «Sonny» Kryzanowski, Acquired 73 Years Ago Today By The Hawks

After time with the Fort Frances Canadians senior team and service in the Royal Canadian Navy, Kryzanowski suited up for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues from 1945 to 1948.
His leadership and strong two-way play caught the attention of NHL scouts, and in 1948 he jumped directly from university hockey to the big league. He went on to play four seasons with the Bruins.
Boston coach Lynn Patrick valued his versatility, using him in every position except goal. Known for his rugged style, Kryzanowski developed a reputation as one of the league's most effective hitters and penalty killers.
Chicago acquired him in 1952, but his time with the team didn't last. After only five games, he stepped down from the NHL, ending his career in the AHL with the Providence Reds and Hershey Bears.
Kryzanowski retired from pro hockey after the 1955-56 season to pursue a teaching career.
In 1979, he returned to Northwestern Ontario, dedicating himself to coaching minor hockey and contributing to the sport's growth in the region for decades.
Even if he only played five games with the Hawks, his time in Chicago is worth remembering. Stay tuned for more stories from the Hawks' history as we get closer to the start of the historic 2025-26 season.
